Vaughan Chopper Pumps

How Vaughan Chopper Pumps Work

Vaughan Chopper Pumps are heavy-duty centrifugal pumps engineered to chop and pump solids-laden fluids without clogging. Their unique cutting action and robust design make them ideal for industrial, municipal, and agricultural applications where conventional pumps fail.

Unlike standard centrifugal pumps, Vaughan chopper pumps incorporate a cutter bar and specially shaped impeller vanes that slice incoming solids into smaller pieces before they enter the pumping chamber. This chopping action minimizes plug-ups and allows the pump to handle tough materials such as ragged waste, fibrous debris, metal chips, and other high-solids slurries. Internal components are cast and heat-treated for durability, and the design has been refined for more than 60 years of proven performance.

Key Features

  • Integrated Cutting Mechanism – Hardened cutter bars and rotating impeller blades shear fibrous and stringy debris before it enters the impeller, preventing clogging and protecting downstream equipment.
  • High-Solids Handling – Ideal for heavy sewage, agricultural slurry, and wastewater containing fibrous or abrasive materials.
  • Durable Components – Built from abrasion-resistant materials for long-lasting performance in demanding environments.
  • Adjustable Cutters – Blade-to-cutter clearance can be easily adjusted to maintain peak cutting efficiency over time.
  • Multiple Configurations – Available in submersible, dry-pit, vertical cantilever, and horizontal configurations to suit a wide range of installations.
  • High-Torque Motors – Engineered to deliver consistent torque, powering through tough, stringy materials without stalling.
  • Flushless Mechanical Seals – Heavy-duty seals that require no external water supply, protecting the motor and extending service life.
  • Optimized Impeller Design – Semi-open, cupped impellers reduce material wrapping while enhancing cutting and pumping efficiency.
  • Proven Reliability & Reduced Lifecycle Costs – Eliminates the need for upstream comminutors or grinders, minimizes downtime, and lowers maintenance expenses.

Submersible Chopper Pumps

Kelso offers rugged Vaughan submersible chopper pump solutions designed for demanding wastewater and solids-conditioning applications. Built to operate fully submerged, these pumps combine an integrated cutting system with heavy-duty construction to shear debris before it can clog or disrupt downstream processes.

Mounted to a transportable base and available with a high-velocity discharge nozzle, submersible chopper pumps are ideal for homogenizing and conditioning solids in:

  • Primary and secondary clarifier scum pits
  • Aerobic and anaerobic digesters
  • Lift stations
  • Agricultural lagoons and slurry pits

By eliminating grease caps, breaking down floating debris, and preventing solids accumulation, these pumps help maintain tank capacity and improve overall system efficiency. The result is fewer emergency callouts, reduced reliance on vacuum trucks, and long-term protection of downstream equipment.

For facilities seeking reliable solids management and lower lifecycle costs, submersible chopper pumps provide a durable, field-proven solution.
